Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart. – Pablo Casals
Music has been a big part of my life. Even though I can’t sing a lick or play an instrument, nothing motivates me, or comforts me, like a song.
When I trace my life back to the important events, it’s easy to associate a song to that event. Maybe it was the song playing on the car radio when Mary Beth and I went on our first date or the song that saved my soul when I was going through one of my darkest periods; songs have always walked with me.
After a lifetime of being surrounded by music, I know this: Songs have the ability to evoke emotion like nothing else.
These are the songs that remind me of those memorable times, places and people – these are the songs of my life. (Reading by email? Click through to the site to listen.)
American Pie by Don McLean
This song with its complex, but poetic lyrics spoke to me. It told me that I could use words in a similar way to touch the hearts and minds of others.
Gonna Fly Now (Theme from Rocky) by Bill Conti
I was in high school when Rocky was released. The movie’s theme of overcoming fear and doubt showed me that no matter the odds, I have the strength to achieve my goals and dreams, too.
Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major on Piano by George Winston
On June 22, 1985 Mary Beth walked down the aisle to this song, took my hand and hasn’t let go.
True Colors by Cyndi Lauper
During one of the most transformational times in my life, I was lifted up to this song. When my feet found the ground again, I was a changed person who was learning how to see what others see in me.
Love Can Build a Bridge by The Judds
This song was an inspiration to name my blog, The BridgeMaker because it reminded me that even though we may not like where we are today, we do the have a choice to build a bridge and walk to where we want to go.
Lose My Soul by TobyMac
This song is special to me for two reasons: It was one of the first songs that introduced me to Christian music and because of its encouraging message that we can have our heart’s desire without compromising our values.
