The More You Give, the More You Have

the power of love

My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.
Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Juliet was just a teenager when she proclaimed her love for Romeo, but she was wise beyond her years. She knew the truth about love.

True love expands and increases when it is given away, increasing for the giver as well as the receiver.

We sometimes think of love as an exchange. I will love you and you will love me back. A quid pro quo which must be traded in equal quantities or one person is left with less.

This kind of love is risky business, with potential for loss and pain. A bad bargain.

But love in its purest form is limitless. Like the loaves and fishes that Jesus blessed, love multiplies to feed the spirits of the hungry until all are sated…with more love left over. There is never not enough.

Love’s Secret

What is love’s secret? How does it do that?

No secret.

Love is the essence of the universe.

The Bible teaches that God is love, perfect love. And we are the children of God, created in his image; therefore, we are perfect love as well.

So to me, the question isn’t really how love does what it does, but rather why aren’t we all living in infinite love. What blocks our experience of the love that is as ever expanding as the universe itself?

Love is blocked by fear.

We sometimes think of fear as the opposite of love, but love has no opposite. It is all encompassing and eternal.

However, our experience of love can be blocked, just as we can block the light of the sun without changing the steady brilliance of the sun at all. Fear acts in the same way to block the unchanging radiance of love.

Well, if that’s true, then I, for one, want to get rid of fear because I do not want my love sunshine blocked.

But how to do that?

Fighting with fear just makes it bigger because it acknowledges fear as real. I become afraid of fear. The simplest way to release fear is to let love do it for me. “Perfect love casts out fear.” 1 John 4:18.

Rather than fighting fear on my own, I can instead turn to the power of love and ask love to release me from my fear.

Then the way is open for pure love to flow into my spirit and forth into the world. The magic happens and I can feel love increase and expand with every breath, bringing joy and peace along for the ride.

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. – Unknown

  • Galen = A stupendous post…your words about the power of love in relationship to everything – but in the post specifically in discussing fear – is profound – and not discussed enough…

    • Fran, I appreciate your kind and encouraging words. To me, fear is the major block to love, and I agree with you that we all benefit from discussing the relationship of the two. Thanks for commenting.

  • Thank you for sharing those essential observations and experiences, Galen!

In our daily life, we tend to believe and live as if love can only bet given to other people. The deep pain of a widow is also the pain experienced when it is no longer possible to give love to her life partner. In that place It feels as if love no longer flows – and what could be more devastating…

Giving love to oneself – and also receiving love from oneself – is as essential as sharing love with others. Love cannot flow unless it flows freely within us too. “Love is the essence of the universe” also means: The universe loves itself. So shall each of us… 🙂

    • Halina, Thank you for your important addition to the conversation. Yes, love starts with ourselves! How we love others mirrors how we love ourselves. I’m so glad you pointed this out and I especially love how you explained it..

  • Hi Galen,

Beautiful post here. Whatever we can do to let go of our fear is worth it. Love is really all we have and if fear gets in the way, it leaves us stuck. Very inspiring words to look for love instead.

    • Cathy, I’m sorry for my delay in responding. I was at my cabin for a couple of days. How nice to return and find your comment. I agree that I’m all for anything that helps me release my fear. Thanks for your kind words.

  • Lovely as always, Galen! Sometimes I like to just sit and listen to the color of love around me, which is something like rose quartz, I think. It’s kind of a mist in the air, and it’s always there. We may think we’re alone or unloved, but in truth we never are.

    • That’s a wonderful image, Jennifer. I’m going to carry that with me. I’m amazed that it is something that you can actually see and that it is everywhere in the air. Thank you for sharing that!

  • Beautiful! Love conquers all! You’re always such a delight to read, Galen! Hugs!
    Thanks, Alex!

    • Vidya, you are too sweet. Well, no, I guess t here is no such thing as too sweet. You are VERY sweet! Hugs back to you. Thanks for commenting.
