”Everyone is trying to accomplish something big, not realizing that life is made up of little things.” ~ Frank Howard Clark
Every day we are presented with the most amazing things to enjoy. We don’t need to wait for the next big thing to come along when we have perfectly-sized things already with us.
These things don’t come with a price tag or require much effort to create; they just need us to take the time to enjoy their immeasurable value. And when we do, they can light up the world with their beauty.
The small things can be found in how we live, how we love and how we can make the most of each day. The small things are easy to spot because they put out a light so bright that the darkness doesn’t stand a chance against the healing power that comes bursting through.
The last several weeks I’ve been making a list of the small things that bring me peace, faith and hope – beautiful, amazing hope. Here are a few that make my world shine a little brighter:
Hearing my children say, “I love you Dad” is medicine for my soul.
Finding the words that express exactly how I feel.
The sweet good-night kiss Mary Beth gives.
Taking the first sip of my morning coffee.
Witnessing kindness come alive by the action of others.
The taste of salt water on my lips after plunging into the ocean.
Providing a home that makes my family feel safe.
Helping someone find their answer.
A favorite song played toward the end of my run.
Receiving an unexpected love note from my wife.
Breathing in the fresh air at a baseball game.
The guilty pleasure of a Diet Coke and popcorn.
Admiring the snow cover the world like a blanket made from grace.
Watching my children build their lives and then holding my breath when there is a stumble.
Sometimes the simple path to enjoying the small things takes us to a place where the darkness seems a little less intimidating and the light feels absolutely amazing.
What gives you light?
