It can be easy to look good on the outside. A trip to the barber shop or hair salon can improve the style of your hair in little time and with minimal effort. Laser hair removal clinics are multiplying faster than Starbucks stores and if you have the money, and the nerve, there are medical doctors who create their art by using their patients’ bodies as a canvass.

Looking good on the outside is important to all of us – me included. Five workouts a week, a discerning eye on what goes into my mouth and a clean shave every morning helps me to look as good as can be expected. To be honest, the real reason I do these things is to feel even better on the inside.

For most of my life, experiencing true and lasting self-confidence has been a challenge. I workout not because I have hopes to become a world-class athlete anytime soon. I workout because of how I feel about myself afterwards. The feelings of accomplishment and commitment are my fuel – my energy to sustain me through the challenges and obstacles that occur as a natural part of just living a life.

Feeling good on the inside is integral to living a happy, successful and balanced life. But, not all days are easy ones. I met Mary Beth 25 years ago today. She was a 17-year-old looking forward to her high school graduation and I was 21 preparing for a teaching job later in the fall. We found each other on May 4, 1984 and started the process of building a life together. Even though our relationship looks different today than it did in 1984, the foundation is still on solid ground and able to support us for many more years to come.

It was fate that brought us together. My wife and her cousin had plans to go to a popular bar in Virginia Beach (the legal drinking at the time was 18 and Mary Beth was only a few weeks away from her birthday and decided to press her luck), but a wrong turn steered them to downtown Norfolk instead.

Rather than turning around, Mary Beth and Marcia decided to head to a college bar near Old Dominion University, my college. That night I went to a baseball game and was heading home but decided to stop for a beer first. We both arrived at the same place and in the same moment.
